I finally snatched some time from my horribly invested schedule to scribble something!
I was impressed by the making of "Maharaja" (Tamil) movie; and admired Soori's performance in "Garudan" (Tamil).
A seemingly old plot of dacoity and vengeance yet skilfully scripted anew makes “Maharaja” appealing. The storyline is gripping because the actual reason behind Maharaja’s (played by Vijay Sethupathi) actions is not revealed till half the movie is passed. The flashback sequences are justly arranged to probe the curiosity further. A handful of characters, minimal dialogues and subtle acting is what “Maharaja” offers even though it deals with a dark theme. It is a gritty film.
“Gaurudan”, on the other hand runs on predictable moves. However, it stands apart for the actors involved. When supporting actors or comedians take to mainstream roles, it is challenging for the audience to accept them immediately. There are only a handful of actors who have made this shift seem easy – like, Vivek in “Vellai Pookal”; Bramhanandam in “Ranga Maarthaanda”; Allari Naresh in “Naandhi”; and Kovai Sarala in “Sembi”. Soori too made this shift and surprised the audience with his dedicated efforts in “Viduthalai” (Part I); and “Garudan” too gives him the space to perform a serious and an action-filled role. The movie narrates a rift between three friends because of “pennu, ponnu, mannu” (woman, money, land). Soori’s performance strikes through, and there is also a slight tinge of his comedy flare in reactions, which was completely absent in “Viduthalai”. Give this movie a try.
Thank you for sharing. Enjoyed watching Maharaja. Watching Garudan.
